Decide if you want to be employed or freelance


The very first thing you should decide is if you want to work for someone else or for yourself. You can even do both if you want. But be warned – copywriting is a fast-paced career and you’ll often be juggling multiple projects and working to tight deadlines, so it’s essential that you’re able to manage your time well. Otherwise, you’re going to end up with a reputation as being unreliable, and this is something that spreads fast. You want your reputation to be a favorable one. In many cases, copywriters will start out working for agencies or even companies in the marketing department either as an intern or as a junior copywriter, and then after gaining experience after a few years will go and work for themselves. Some benefits of working freelance is being able to make more money, choosing your own clients and deciding which projects to take on. However, agency life certainly offers a great deal of benefits, too.


Pick a niche


This especially applies if you’re going to be working for yourself. If you want to stand out to potential clients, then choosing a niche for yourself is crucial. For example, you could choose to write copy for the fitness industry or you could choose to write a specific kind of copy such as blogs and marketing material for companies like – it doesn’t really matter what your niche is, as long as you have one and are able to clarify it in your marketing.


Learn about copywriting


Like anything in life you want to master, you have to practice it consistently, and copywriting is a craft that requires constant learning and growth, so if you’ve never done any kind of copywriting before, then you should start learning about it. You can pick up books for beginners from places like CopyHackers and should also read books from advertising and copywriting greats such as David Ogilvy, Gary Halbert, etc.


Get practice


Learning is only good if you actually implement and practice what you learn, and any clients you approach or who approach you are going to want to see proof of your skills. This is where your experience comes in. Now, if you don’t have any experience, then you should create things by yourself such as adverts, blog posts and even web copy samples. However, you can also let people know you’re just starting out and would like to write for them for a reduced rate. Don’t do it for free, though.
