Cancer continues to be a major health challenge for Filipinos, prompting a recent gathering in Manila to unveil Cancer Game Plan PH, a nationwide initiative designed to equip patients with the tools, resources, and support they need to navigate the disease. The program aims to create a stronger, more patient-centered care system that addresses challenges from diagnosis through treatment.
Pillars of the Initiative
Cancer Game Plan PH focuses on three main goals:
-
Promoting early detection through regular testing and awareness campaigns.
-
Building robust support networks that respond to patients’ emotional, physical, and logistical needs.
-
Increasing access to treatment for therapies that are often too costly for many patients.
Emerging from the previous Hope from Within campaign, the initiative seeks to transform cancer care in the Philippines. It highlights advanced treatment options, including targeted therapies and breakthrough approaches like immunotherapy, which offer hope to patients with previously hard-to-treat cancers.
While initially centered on lung cancer, the program now covers melanoma, head and neck cancers, gastric cancer, bladder cancer, and Hodgkin’s lymphoma, broadening its reach to benefit more patients nationwide.
Voices Behind the Movement
The launch brought together key figures from the Department of Health, Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations, Philippine Society of Medical Oncologists, Sun Life Insurance, and the Cancer Coalition of the Philippines. Their combined expertise ensures a comprehensive approach to tackling the challenges of cancer care.
The event was moderated by Diego Castro, a long-time lung cancer advocate and face of the Hope From Within: Test, Talk, Take Action campaign. He introduced fellow Cancer Game Plan PH influencers, including television personality Susan Africa, medical oncologist Dr. Meredith Garcia, multi-sport athlete and cancer survivor Louie Sangalang, occupational medicine specialist and breast cancer survivor Dr. Gia Sison, and melanoma survivor Danny Dimabuyu. Dimabuyu has previously shared his experience benefiting from immunotherapy with support from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, highlighting the potential impact of accessible treatment.
Expert Insights on Patient Care
Dr. Clarito Cairo, Cancer Program Manager of the Department of Health, opened discussions by outlining the national burden of cancer and government efforts to improve patient support. He emphasized ongoing enhancements to the PhilHealth Z Benefit package, which provides financial coverage for certain cancer treatments.
Fatima “Girlie” Lorenzo, President of PAPO, shared insights into the emotional and practical challenges patients face throughout their cancer journey. She emphasized the need for a structured “cancer game plan” that addresses these challenges holistically.
Dr. Herdee Luna of PSMO discussed the collaborative efforts of medical teams in improving survival rates. She highlighted the availability of new treatment options in the Philippines, including immunotherapy, and stressed the importance of proper testing and expert guidance to determine eligibility.
The high cost of cancer treatment was a recurring theme. Current programs such as the PCSO and PhilHealth’s Z Benefit Packages provide vital financial support, but gaps remain. Lirio Torres of Sun Life Insurance added that health insurance can offer additional financial security for patients and their families, helping them prepare for unexpected treatment costs.
Paul Perez of the Cancer Coalition of the Philippines updated attendees on the national cancer bill, which proposes a coordinated, multi-disciplinary cancer management program. The legislation aims to improve access to high-quality care and ensure essential medicines and services are available for all patients.
Personal Stories Amplify the Cause
Cancer Game Plan PH influencers shared their own journeys, highlighting how effective support networks can dramatically improve patient experiences. Their testimonies reinforce the importance of reliable guidance and community in navigating cancer treatment.
Moving Forward
The launch concluded with Allan Ancheta of MSD Philippines announcing the official rollout of Cancer Game Plan PH social media platforms. These channels aim to engage more stakeholders, spread awareness, and strengthen nationwide support for cancer patients. Together with advocates, influencers, and healthcare professionals, the initiative reaffirms a collective commitment to improving outcomes and saving more lives.
