This is a contributor’s blogpost …

I know that life can get a little too much at times, and with such a huge chunk of your time being spent at work, your career can often be the reason why you are not feeling yourself. There are a number of reasons why you may find your career is bringing you down a little. It might be that you want to ensure you are on the right track, it might be that you want to maintain your healthy lifestyle or positive outlook on life. But can your career be your downfall? I wanted to share with you some of the ways you can ensure your career has a positive impact on your life.

Do something that makes you happy

Not all of us are fortunate to do something we love everyday. But if you do have the opportunity to change your career or are just thinking about your next steps into the modern working world, try and pick something that makes you happy. It can be the simplest of ways to ensure that you enjoy what you do. After all, there’s a great chance you will be spending a huge chunk of your time doing it. If you are unsure what it is that you think would be likely to make you happy, take a few steps back and focus on the skills you already have versus the things you love to do. You may find there is career in there that you could pursue and move forward with.

Encourage a healthier environment in the workplace

One of the next things to think about would be to encourage a healthier environment in the workplace. With many of us needing to be doing a job for the majority of the day, our health should be a high priority. You can learn more about the things you can do to encourage a healthier workplace environment, but often it could be simple changes to your routine that could help. That might be something as simple as standing up more frequently and moving around, getting some fresh air, taking a healthy lunch to work and avoiding negative people and their vibes.

Have good positive energy

On the flip side, you could really focus on your own outlook and the energy that you expel into the environment you are in. Have you ever been around someone who is positive and find that the energy rubs off on you? That for some reason you can’t help but get sucked in and feel happier and more positive yourself? You could be that person. It is all about having a positive outlook and thought process and oozing positive energy. There are plenty of articles online to help you work on your thought technique and outlook.

Leave work at work

It may sound basic, but try and leave the work at work when it comes to being at home. It can be hard to separate the two lives, but this is especially important if you have a stressful job. Try and have a rule that you leave any work issues and stress at your front door and as soon as you walk through it you are in home mode. It helps you to relax and unwind from the day and also re-energise, perhaps giving you better clarity and readiness for work the following day. If you can’t do that, then allow yourself only a small amount of time to maybe discuss your day with your partner, then draw a line in the sand and enjoy your home time.

Make future goals and work towards them

Everyone can really benefit from goal setting opportunities, especially in the workplace. It gives you great options to consider and allows you to really think about what you want from your career and have something to work towards. It might be a career promotion, or it could even be something like starting your own business or developing further in a different direction. Having goals helps give you something to work towards, and setting targets along the way can keep you motivated to achieve it.

Communicate closely with your team and line manager

Finally, it is always a good idea to communicate your goals and feelings toward work with your team or line manager. If there is anything that needs improvement, communication and feedback are going to help change things for the better.

I hope some of these tips and suggestions will help you ensure that your career has a positive impact on your life.
